Systematic botanist trained in Germany, South Africa and the USA (NYBG) with experience in research in the systematics and ecology of several tropical plant families, floristics and phytogeography, phytochemistry, floral ecology and morphology. He has worked extensively on the South American flora, including numerous field studies, especially in Peru. He has since 1999 worked in the commercial application of South American plants, both at the university and through his own company (botconsult GmbH), focused on biological, technical and financial aspects of raw material sourcing, science in sustainability studies, wild harvest of medicinal plants, domestication and wild harvest of medicinal and food plants in Peru (and other countries) and their export/import. As industry funded projects the results do not appear in the list of publications. He supervises students and teaches at the Institute of Biology. He is member of the Advisory Board of the ISSC-MAP (International Standard on the Sustainable Wild Harvest of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants). He has published numerous articles in international and South American journals.
